Emergency Response for Newly Arrived Refugees – A New Start in Safety

Hunger Fighters Uganda (HFU), with funding from Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) and UNHCR, implemented the “A New Start in Safety” Emergency Response Project to support newly arrived refugees fleeing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The project was implemented at Nyakabande and Matanda Transit Centers and Kabazana Reception Center in South Western Uganda.

The intervention strengthened emergency reception services by improving access to food security, nutrition, WASH, protection, and essential support for vulnerable refugees. During implementation, the project supported the response for 104,331 newly arrived refugees and directly provided nutritious hot meal supplementation to 26,154 people, improving dietary diversity and food consumption.

The project also conducted nutrition screening for 2,107 children under five and pregnant and breastfeeding women, treated 563 cases of acute malnutrition, and reached over 3,300 people with health and nutrition education. In addition, 5,294 beneficiaries participated in WASH awareness sessions promoting safe water, hygiene, sanitation, and disease prevention.

Beyond emergency assistance, the project promoted resilience through nutrition counseling, growth monitoring, backyard gardening, and support for safe refugee transit processes. By integrating life-saving assistance with community-based nutrition and hygiene interventions, the project helped newly arrived refugees begin their journey to safety with improved health, dignity, and hope.
