Kitchen Gardening Models

Tackling Nutrition, Building Self-Reliance

The Hunger Fighters Uganda Kitchen Gardening Models are an innovative, community-based nutrition intervention established in 2018 as a complementary activity to the General Food Assistance (GFA) programme, implemented in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Nakivale and Oruchinga refugee settlements. The initiative was introduced to improve household access to nutritious foods and to promote self-reliance among refugees and vulnerable host communities.

Following its success, the programme was expanded to Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in 2019, enabling more refugee households to grow a variety of nutrient-rich vegetables within their homes using simple, affordable, and climate-smart gardening techniques.

The Kitchen Gardening Models are designed to address micronutrient deficiencies and prevent malnutrition by increasing the availability and consumption of fresh vegetables year-round. Gardens also reduce dependence on food assistance by empowering families with practical skills to grow their own food, improve dietary diversity, and generate a surplus for household income.

Since the programme began, over 10,000 kitchen gardens have been established, benefiting thousands of refugees and host-community households. The initiative has become an important pathway towards resilience by strengthening household food security, enhancing nutrition, and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.

Our Impact

Through innovation, partnership, and community participation, Hunger Fighters Uganda continues to transform small household spaces into productive gardens that nourish families, improve health, and create pathways towards sustainable livelihoods.
